Hampshire Cosmetics are proud to announce that our Environmental and Ethical Manager Karen Taylor won “The Environmental Manager of the Year” title at The Environment and Energy Awards on the 24th May 2011. At a glittering awards ceremony in the National Motorcycle Museum Karen was presented with the award by Olympic Medallist Steve Parry and the Sponsors of the category edie.net. The Awards are part of Sustainability Live! and Karen is delighted to have improved on her Highly Commended from last years awards. Winning such a prestigious national award is fantastic recognition of the work we have done over the last few years to minimise waste and increase the Sustainability of our business.

Hampshire Cosmetics and Anesco sign a record breaking Solar Lease

Hampshire Cosmetics are delighted to announce that they have just agreed to lease the roof of their 55,000 sq.ft Waterlooville facility to Anesco. The project will see Anesco install a 277kWp solar PV array in what is thought to be the largest “zero capital” project in the country. This installation will generate enough clean, renewable energy on site to meet 20% of Hampshire’s annual energy requirements, will see them greatly reduce their carbon footprint and reinforces their continued commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

Ethical supply chains

As members of Sedex (The Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) we are working with our suppliers to monitor the ethical performance of our supply chain. We have started a series of audits which will see us asses the performance of our supply chain against our quality, environmental, ethical, development and purchasing requirements. We feel that these joint audits will be a valuable, knowledge sharing experience for both the supplier and ourselves.

We are keen that any of our suppliers who are also members of Sedex link to us and allow us to view their self assessment questionnaires as part of this process. Our membership number is S962983942890.

EEF Awards recognise Environmental Achievements

We are pleased to announce that we were awarded a Highly Commended in the Environmental Efficiency (South East) category of the “eef – the manufacturers organisation” awards 2010. We were presented with our certificate during an awards lunch held at Mercedes Benz World.

This is further recognition of our use of alternative funding sources – such as carbon trust loans, enviroskills and zero capital projects – and demonstrates that significant environmental improvements can be made without the need for major financial investments.

As announced previously we were shortlisted in the Manufacturer Magazine’s Awards 2010 . Although we didn’t get to lift the winners trophy when the results for Manufacturer Magazine’s Sustainable Manufacturer Award were announced at a gala dinner on the 19th November, we feel that making it through to the last six of such a high profile national award is a great achievement.

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact whilst continuing to grow the business and the recognition gained through awards such as this is a great boost to staff motivation.

It’s the Taking Part that Counts

We are delighted to announce that we have been short-listed for the Manufacturer Magazine’s Sustainable Manufacturer Award for 2010.

The final results for the award will be announced on 19th November, so until then, we are keeping our fingers crossed!

We see reaching the short list as a tribute to the hard work and dedication of all our staff, together with our Environmental Manager, Karen Taylor. Even if we do not win the award, we are very pleased with the progress we have been making, and will be continuing our work in this area.

Expanding Environmental Awareness

One of the methods we are using to try and reduce our impact on the environment is to improve our staffs awareness of current environmental issues.

Olive Consultancy, in conjunction with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), have been running a one day training course for us over the last few months. We are now delighted to report that we have had over 70 members of staff attend this course and achieve the related training certificate.

This course has proved very popular in all areas of the business, and has been highly effective for attendees in highlighting environmental issues both inside and outside the workplace.

Carbon Emission Reduction and Performance Improvement

As a company, we are always trying to improve our environmental practices to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as updating our internal processes to ensure we’re working as efficiently as possible, with as little waste as possible.

One of the challenges we have to overcome as a developer and manufacturer of cosmetics, is the storage of some of our key oils and waxes. The overall requirement is to ensure that these key materials are stored at the correct temperature for the optimum period of time without incurring significant energy costs or generating excess amounts of unwanted heat.

To help overcome this, we recently replaced our original ‘hot room’ with a new Denios WK314.2 thermotechnology drum-heater.

This has helped us to cut down our carbon emissions, as well as improving our operational performance and our departmental GMP. It has also provided us a cost saving as we reduce our energy requirements for warming raw materials.
